Alcohol May Disrupt Sleep

Alcohol is a sedative that may help you fall asleep, but it prevents deeper stages of sleep and often causes you to awaken in the middle of the night.

Emerging research suggests drinking alcohol to fall asleep may ultimately be counterproductive as the drug interferes with sleep homeostasis, the body’s sleep-regulating mechanism. If you are experiencing difficulty sleeping, don’t use alcohol. Talk to your doctor or a sleep medicine physician to determine what factors are keeping you from sleeping.
