New York City Health Commissioner said that 117 New Yorkers were being actively monitored for signs of the Ebola virus. These are 117 people in the city who handled Dr. Spencer or have recently returned from Ebola-stricken countries. The city is tracking these people for Ebola symptoms by issuing free thermometers and trusting them to relay their temperatures to the Health Department twice a day.
“Active monitoring” means state or local health officials establish regular communication with the individuals. About 470 Health Department workers are responsible for calling all those being monitored twice a day and keeping a log of their temperatures.
